Fireproof treatment of buildings and the use of fire-resistant coatings to improve their fire resistance are essential projects. However, fireproof coatings are not widely used, and the selection of fireproof coatings for different materials also varies. Therefore, in order to achieve the best fire resistance of fireproof coatings, the following two issues must be noted when selecting fireproof coatings:
Attention to detail one: Improper use of fireproof coatings for wood and steel
Using fire-resistant coatings that should have been used for wood and those used for steel indiscriminately is a common problem because it is difficult to distinguish between the two coatings based on their appearance. If used incorrectly, such as using fire-resistant coatings for wood structures on steel structures, the adhesion of the coatings will be severely insufficient, making it easy for them to peel off and greatly reducing the fire-resistant function of the coatings.
Attention to detail two: distinction between water-based and solvent based coatings
There are two types of steel structure fireproof coating manufacturers: solvent based fireproof coating and water-based fireproof coating. From the perspective of adhesion, solvent based coatings are superior to water-based coatings. Therefore, solvent based fire-resistant coatings should be used for outdoor steel structures, while solvent based or water-based fire-resistant coatings can be used for indoor steel structures.
Some domestic manufacturers produce fireproof coatings that will decompose into toxic gases when exposed to fire. If fire-resistant electrical products use this coating, toxic gases will be released once a fire occurs. For example, the use of G60 chlorinated ethylene fireproof coating, which has been phased out, will decompose into toxic chlorine gas when exposed to fire, so it cannot be selected.
Steel structure, as a form of high-rise building structure, is widely used in the construction industry due to its high strength, light weight, good extensibility, seismic resistance, and short construction period. It has shown strong vitality, especially in super high-rise and large-span buildings. The mechanical strength of steel decreases with the increase of temperature. At around 5000 ℃, its strength drops to 40% to 50%. The mechanical properties of steel, such as yield point, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and load capacity, rapidly decrease and quickly lose their support capacity, leading to building collapse. Therefore, it is imperative to protect steel structures.
Brushing or spraying fire-resistant coatings on the surface of steel structures can play a role in fire prevention and insulation, preventing the steel from rapidly heating up and reducing its strength in a fire, and avoiding the steel structure from losing its support capacity and causing building collapse.
In rapidly developing buildings, the use of concrete structures is very common. Among them, prestressed reinforced concrete has better crack resistance, stiffness, shear resistance, and stability than ordinary reinforced concrete, is lighter in weight, and can save concrete and steel. Concrete structure fireproof coating is similar to steel structure fireproof coating, but has different performance requirements. As the coating is applied on alkaline concrete surfaces, it is required that the coating has good alkali resistance or be pre coated with alkali resistant sealing primer during use.
